University of Sydney CCE – Listen and Speak Under Pressure

A one-day professional development workshop delivered by the University of Sydney's Centre for Continuing Education (CCE).

The course teaches a structured, four-step system for listening and speaking confidently under pressure — covering Q&A sessions, ad hoc meeting questions, and high-stakes encounters with senior executives. Facilitated by Michael Kelly, a communication trainer with over 20 years of experience, the course uses repeated practice attempts and collegial feedback to build real-world fluency.

What you will learn

  • Improve skill in planning to listen and quickly understand questions
  • Use 'pause gaps' and honour silence effectively
  • Improve confidence and perceived confidence through physical presentation and vocal techniques
  • Handle fear and emotion when under pressure
  • Apply the Open–Middle–Close speaking structure
  • Use the 5-step 'think on your feet' template
  • Utilise a range of easy-to-use talk structures to respond to any question

This workshop is one of three CCE courses by Michael Kelly, alongside:
